NBA draft 2013: The complete first round, broken down pick-by-pick

  • Thursday was historic as the Cleveland Cavaliers took Anthony Bennett, a power forward out of UNLV, with the No. 1

  •  overall pick, spurning big men Nerlens Noel and Alex Len and shocking the experts.
  •

  • A flurry of trades has happened before at the NBA draft, but never before has a Canadian-born player been taken No. 1 overall.
  • Thursday was historic as the Cleveland Cavaliers took Anthony Bennett, a power forward out of UNLV, with the No. 1 overall pick, spurning big men Nerlens Noel and Alex Len and shocking the experts. But that wasn't the only surprise.
  • Our Mitch Lawerence breaks down the first round (trade key at the bottom).
  • 1. CAVS
  • Anthony Bennett
  • UNLV 6-8, PF
  • Hooray, Canada! Bennett is the first Canadian to go No. 1 in the NBA draft. But does this non-passing, low-post scorer really fit with Kyrie Irving?

  • 2. MAGIC
  • Victor Oladipo
  • Indiana 6-4¼, SG
  • The rebuilding Magic went the safe route, taking a coachable player who is going to be good. How good?

  • 3. WIZARDS
  • Otto Porter, Jr.
  • Georgetown 6-8½, SF
  • The former Hoya can defend, and the Wizards need a starting small forward. Trevor Ariza, the ex-Knick, wasn’t the answer.
  • 4. BOBCATS
  • Cody Zeller
  • Indiana 7-0¾, C
  • The Bobcats may have reached here. Scouts say Zeller struggles against athletic players, is a defensive liability and is soft.
  • 5. SUNS
  • Alex Len
  • Maryland 7-1, C
  • New Suns coach Jeff Hornacek wants to run the old Utah offense, which will let Len show his talents in low post and as a passer.
  • 6. PELICANS -a
  • Nerlens Noel
  • Kentucky, 6-11¾, C
  • Slid from No. 1 spot because of ACL injury, got traded to Philly (with a future No. 1) for Jrue Holiday. So the Sixers get another center with a bad knee.
  • Projected top pick Nerlens Noel falls to the No. 6 slot.
  • HOWARD SIMMONS/NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
  • Projected top pick Nerlens Noel falls to the No. 6 slot.
  • 7. KINGS
  • Ben McLemore
  • Kansas 6-4¾, SG
  • McLemore thought he should have gone No. 1 and he might turn out to be the best player in this draft.
  • 8. PISTONS
  • Kentavious Caldwell-Pope
  • Georgia 6-5½, SG
  • Are you sitting? Joe Dumars might have struck gold for once in the draft with an athletic shooter.
  • 9. T-WOLVES -b
  • Trey Burke
  • Michigan 6-1¼, PG
  • GM Flip Saunders took Burke to move him to Utah, which thinks it has finally found a replacement for Deron Williams.
  • 10. BLAZERS
  • C.J. McCollum
  • Lehigh 6-3, PG
  • Damian Lillard was Rookie of the Year, so where that leaves McCollum now is anyone’s guess.
  • 11. 76ERS
  • Michael Carter-Williams
  • Syracuse, 6-5¾, G
  • With rookie GM Sam Hinkie in charge, the Sixers are rebuilding. Carter-Williams replaces Jrue Holiday as starting point guard.
  • 12. THUNDER
  • Steven Adams
  • Pittsburgh 7-0, C
  • He’s raw and very methodical, but he still worked his way into a lottery pick with some very impressive workouts.
  • 13. MAVS -c
  • Kelly Olynyk
  • Gonzaga 7-0, PF
  • Mavs were busy wheeling and dealing, first sending Olynyk to Celtics for Boston’s No. 16 pick.
  • 14. JAZZ -b
  • Shabazz Muhammad
  • UCLA, 6-6¼, SF
  • Muhammad, whom one scout called a “good shooter, but a poor man’s James Harden,’’ went to the Timberwolves in the Burke trade.
  • Lucas Nogueira of Brazil wins haircut (or lack thereof) of the night. He ends up with the Hawks.
  • KEITH BEDFORD
  • Lucas Nogueira of Brazil wins haircut (or lack thereof) of the night. He ends up with the Hawks.
  • 15. BUCKS
  • Giannis Antetokounmpo
  • Greece, 6-9, SF
  • They call him the “Greek Freak,’’ but he’s all of 18 years of age, so who knows what he’ll be able to bring to Larry Drew’s new team.
  • 16. CELTICS -c,d
  • Lucas Nogueira
  • Brazil 7-0, PF
  • Celtics moved Nogueira to the Hawks. Nogueira originally entered 2011 draft at the age of 18, then backed out.
  • 17. HAWKS
  • Dennis Schroeder
  • Germany 6-2, PG
  • Scouts think that Schroeder, who might land in Boston, can be a solid NBA playmaker.
  • 18. HAWKS -c,d
  • Shane Larkin
  • Miami 5-11, PG
  • Barry’s son, who gets deal to Dallas, needs to overcome a lack of height and wingspan to be an effective NBA player.
  • 19. CAVS
  • Sergey Karasev
  • Russia, 6-6, SG
  • At the end of the day, are all these pieces the Cavs have selected going to keep Kyrie Irving in Cleveland for the long term? We doubt it.
  • 20. BULLS
  • Tony Snell
  • New Mexico 6-7, SG
  • Derrick Rose won’t recognize all the new backcourt players he’ll be playing with when he finally takes the court next season.
  • 21. JAZZ -b
  • Gorgui Dieng
  • L’ville, 6-10¾, C
  • Dieng will take his shot-blocking and defensive skills to the T-Wolves, as he went in the Burke trade with Utah that also landed Muhammad for the T-Wolves.
  • 22. NETS
  • Mason Plumlee
  • Duke, 7-0½, PF
  • All Nets fans care about is whether Plumlee learns from Kevin Garnett during his rookie season.
  • David Stern (c.), in his last NBA draft as commissioner of the league, has some fun with the draft picks.
  • KATHY WILLENS/AP
  • David Stern (c.), in his last NBA draft as commissioner of the league, has some fun with the draft picks.
  • 23. PACERS
  • Solomon Hill
  • Arizona, 6-7, SF
  • The Pacers went for insurance in case Danny Granger has problems making a comeback from his knee injury.
  • 24. KNICKS
  • Tim Hardaway Jr.
  • Michigan, 6-6, SG
  • It’ll be awfully strange to see Tim’s dad at the Garden, rooting the Knicks on, especially when Miami hits town.
  • 25. CLIPPERS
  • Reggie Bullock
  • UNC, 6-7, SG
  • Doc Rivers adds a scorer for Chris Paul to get the ball to (and yes, Paul is re-signing with L.A.).
  • 26. T-WOLVES -e
  • Andre Roberson
  • Colorado 6-7, SF
  • Minny moved Roberson to Golden State, which didn’t have a first-round pick.
  • 27. NUGGETS -f
  • Rudy Gobert
  • France, 7-2, PF
  • Gobert is heading to Utah in a deal, but the big move in Denver could be free agent Andre Iguodala going to Golden State in a sign-and-trade deal.
  • 28. SPURS
  • Livio Jean-Charles
  • France, 6-9, SF
  • He’s only 19 and was projected to go in the second round, but the Spurs have had a lot of success with French players.
  • 29. THUNDER -g
  • Archie Goodwin
  • Kentucky, 6-5, SG
  • Had Goodwin stayed for a second season with John Calipari, he might have been a lottery pick in the 2014 draft.
  • 30. SUNS -h
  • Nemanja Nedovic
  • Serbia, 6-4, SG
  • Projected as a second-rounder, Nedovic was the seventh European player taken in the first round
